mobile is 87% of adult traffic and tubes still aren't built for it

2026-10-12

the 87% figure gets quoted a lot in adult industry writeups, and it matches what i see in every source i’ve looked at. adult sites mobile traffic is not a “mobile-friendly” situation. it’s a mobile situation, with a desktop minority.

and yet the tubes still feel like desktop sites that got squeezed down. open any of the big ones on a phone and you can see the original layout under the responsive paint.

what 87% should have changed

if nearly nine in ten visits come from a phone, the phone layout is the product. the desktop layout is the edge case you handle later.

that would mean thumb-reachable navigation, one-handed filtering, and pages that don’t reflow three times while ads load. most tubes do none of it. they build for a 1440px grid, then collapse it into one column and call it responsive.

the tell is where the important controls live. search is at the top, which is the hardest place to reach on a modern phone. the categories menu is a hamburger that opens a wall of 80 links in a single scroll.

how tubes actually treat a phone

the revenue model is built on ad inventory, so the phone is treated as a place to stack more of it. a desktop page has room for a sidebar banner. a phone doesn’t, so the banner moves into your content.

the common pattern is a sticky bar pinned to the bottom of the screen, eating 10 to 15% of the viewport for the whole session. on a small screen that’s a real tax, and it makes the page feel cramped before you’ve scrolled once.

then there’s the overlay problem. porn tube popups on phone are rarely true popups anymore, since mobile browsers block most of those. what you get instead is a full-width layer that appears a half second after load, so your tap lands on it instead of on the thumbnail you were aiming at.

fake close buttons are the other classic. a tiny x in the corner of an ad that is itself a link, sized so you miss it about half the time. i’d call this tap-jacking even if the industry has a politer word for it.

the redirect chain

porn site ad redirects on mobile are the part that actually costs you something. a tap on a thumbnail opens a new tab with an ad, and the page you wanted loads in the old one. on a desktop that’s an annoyance. on a phone it’s a tab you didn’t ask for, in a browser that may be one swipe away from an app store listing.

some of these chains pass through two or three tracking domains before landing anywhere. they’re slow on cellular, and they’re the main reason people say they “don’t trust” a site they’ve used for years.

this isn’t a universal problem. it’s worse on tubes that lean on third-party ad networks and lighter on the ones with direct sales. you can feel the difference in the first thirty seconds.

the filter problem on a small screen

categories are where desktop thinking hurts most. a desktop tube can show a left rail with filters for duration, quality, upload date and sort order. a phone can’t, so those controls get hidden behind a sheet or a dropdown that nobody finds.

the result is that people stop filtering. they take whatever the default sort gives them, which is the algorithm’s idea of engagement, and scroll.

the category lists themselves are a separate mess. tubes carry hundreds of tags because long-tail tags feed search traffic, and on a phone that means a flat alphabetical index with no hierarchy. nobody wants to scroll through 300 entries with a thumb to find the one they meant.

here’s the opinion some people will dislike: infinite scroll is the wrong default for this. it feels natural on a phone, but for discovery it’s worse than pages. you can’t tell how deep you are, you can’t go back to where you were after a tap, and the page gets heavier with every screen.

which tubes hold up on a phone

this is subjective and i’ll say so, but a few are clearly better than the rest.

xhamster has put real work into its mobile layout. navigation is compact, the player is solid, and the category access is the least painful of the big ones. it’s still ad heavy, but the ads mostly stay in their lanes.

eporner is the one i’d point to for the simplest experience. the layout is plain and quick, which on a phone beats clever. it’s not pretty, and i’d still pick it over prettier sites.

the aylo sites, redtube and youporn, are competent but dense. they work, and they feel like one template stretched over three brands, which is basically what they are. i’ve covered the portfolio problem elsewhere, so i’ll skip it here.

spankbang is fast, with good search, but the overlay behavior is the one i trust least. xvideos is the giant, and it’s the clearest example of a desktop-shaped site on a small screen. the volume of content is unmatched and the phone layout shows how much of it is an afterthought.

if someone asks me for the best porn site for mobile, the honest answer is “the one with the fewest redirects for the thing you’re after,” and that changes by category. there’s no single winner, and anyone who tells you otherwise is ranking by traffic.

what a mobile-first directory should do

a directory has one advantage here. it doesn’t have to monetize your attention inside the page, so it can be built around the phone from the start.

the rules i’d hold to:

  • no overlays, ever, and no sticky bars on content pages
  • every outbound link opens where you expect it to, and the source is labeled before you tap
  • filters live in a sheet at the bottom of the screen, within thumb reach
  • pages, not infinite scroll, so the back button works
  • pages light enough to load on a weak connection

none of this is hard. it’s mostly a matter of not adding things. the reason tubes don’t do it is that every item on that list costs them ad impressions.

the other piece is honesty about where a tap leads. if a scene lives on xhamster, the card should say xhamster before you commit, so you know which set of popups you’re walking into. that’s the minimum a map owes you.

prowl is built around these constraints, and it’s not done, but the mobile layout was the first thing i designed rather than the last thing i fixed.

the tubes will get there when the ad money says so, which is to say, late.

prowl.xxx is a directory of adult content hosted by third parties. we don't host video. all content remains the property and responsibility of its source platform.
